5 Signs Your AC Needs Service Before It Fails Completely

Most homeowners call a technician only after the AC has stopped completely — but most major failures show warning signs weeks in advance. Here are five symptoms worth acting on early.
1. The Room Takes Longer to Cool
If a space takes noticeably longer to reach a comfortable temperature, refrigerant pressure may be low or the filter may be clogged with dust. Caught early, this is a minor fix — left alone, it forces the compressor to work harder than it should.
2. A Humming or Squealing Noise Appears
A soft hum during operation is normal. A loud hum, squeal, or metal-on-metal rattle usually points to worn motor bearings or a loose fan component.
3. Electricity Bills Rise Without Adding New Units
A compressor working overtime due to low refrigerant or dirty coils draws more power for the same cooling output. A rising bill is often an earlier warning sign than any physical symptom.
4. Water Dripping or Excess Condensation
Water pooling around the indoor unit is usually caused by a blocked drain line or a frozen evaporator coil from restricted airflow.
5. The Unit Turns On and Off Rapidly (Short Cycling)
If the AC cycles on and off in very short intervals, the thermostat sensor or start capacitor may be failing. Left unaddressed, this accelerates compressor wear significantly.
When to Call a Technician
If two or more of these symptoms appear together, schedule an inspection before the unit fails completely — especially for systems supporting business operations like cold storage or server rooms.
