Split AC Leaking Water Indoors: 5 Causes and How to Fix Them

A split AC dripping water inside the room is the most common complaint we hear from homeowners. Besides wetting the floor and damaging wall paint, the dripping is a sign that part of the system is not working as it should. The good news: most causes are easy to identify.

Why Does an AC Produce Water?

While cooling a room, the evaporator in the indoor unit pulls moisture out of the air. That moisture condenses, collects in the drain pan, and flows outside through the drain hose. If any part of this path is disrupted, water overflows and drips into the room.

1. Clogged Drain Hose

This is the most common cause. Dust, algae, and bacterial slime build up inside the drain hose until the water flow is blocked. Water then overflows the drain pan and drips from the bottom of the indoor unit.

How to fix: Detach the outdoor end of the hose, then blow through it or flush it with low-pressure water. For heavy blockages, use a vacuum pump or call a technician.

2. Very Dirty Air Filter

A dust-covered filter restricts airflow to the evaporator. The evaporator temperature drops so low that ice forms on it. When the ice melts, the volume of water exceeds what the drain pan can handle.

How to fix: Remove the filter, wash it under running water, dry it in the shade, and reinstall it. Do this every 2–4 weeks for an AC used daily.

3. Low Refrigerant

Low refrigerant pressure also makes the evaporator freeze. The symptoms are similar to a dirty filter: frost on the pipes or evaporator, weak cooling, then dripping after several hours of operation.

How to fix: A technician must find and repair the refrigerant leak first. Recharging without fixing the leak only delays the problem.

4. Incorrect Indoor Unit Slope

The indoor unit must be installed with a slight tilt toward the drain outlet. If it is mounted too level or tilted the wrong way, water does not reach the drain hose and drips from the side of the unit.

How to fix: Check with a spirit level. If the position is wrong, a technician needs to readjust the mounting bracket.

5. Kinked or Raised Drain Hose

A hose that is kinked, pinched, or rises before it falls will hold water back. This problem often appears after renovation or unit relocation.

How to fix: Make sure the hose slopes downward all the way to the discharge point, with no sharp bends.

Quick Steps When Your AC Drips

  1. Turn off the AC and unplug it so water cannot reach electrical parts.
  2. Place a container or towel under the indoor unit.
  3. Check the filter and look for frost on the evaporator.
  4. Check the outdoor end of the drain hose.
  5. If dripping continues after cleaning the filter and hose, call a technician.

When to Call a Technician

Call a technician if frost keeps coming back, the AC still drips after the filter and hose are cleaned, or water is getting close to the unit's electrical panel. Routine service every 3–4 months also prevents most of the causes above.
